The Hive

60 Wall Street
The Hive is an apartment building with a hydroponic farm, bee hives, and a data center. For this studio, we looked at the design for deconstruction and began the project with studies that took mass away from the building. The scheme that we used for our project has a continuous moving cut that wraps around the building. Within this new zone, there is a hydroponic farm. To repurpose the core, we looked to fit other programs within. The beehives and data center cooling equipment exist in old elevator cores. The heat produced from the data center will heat the areas that the bees are in, the hydroponic systems, and even the building in the winter. Furthermore, the cooled water gets reused in the cooling equipment for the data center in an attempt to save as much energy as possible.
The building will mostly be economically sustained through the sales of space in the data server. These spaces can cost a lot of money and data centers are in high demand in the area due to Wall Street being so close. The plants will also be able to be sold, which will help the building be financially stable and self-sufficient.
