Jihoon Chung Leads Build Your Own IoT Monitoring System Workshop

January 31st, 2025

Troy, N.Y. — CASE Inspires Next Generation Through IoT Workshop at RPI's Black Families Technology Awareness Day

High school students explored the future of smart home technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Black Families Technology Awareness Day on February 1st, 2025. CASE Center for Architectural Science and Ecology led an engaged workshop on the RPI Campus that introduced students to Internet of Things (IoT) technology through hands-on experience building environmental monitoring systems.

Jihoon Chung, Ph.D Candidate at CASE, instructed the session, which provided a hands-on learning environment for participants to dive into the world of IoT technology. Based on his BIM & IoT-based Building Monitoring System research, Chung guided students in the assembly and programming of IoT devices that monitor indoor temperature and air quality, and setting up real-time phone notifications for environmental changes. Through interactive education and real-time applications of technology, participants experienced how IoT technology is increasingly integrated into everyday life through smart home applications.

Beyond practical applications, students gained insight into CASE's cutting-edge research in architectural science and building technology. The workshop showcased how IoT innovations are transforming modern buildings and addressing environmental challenges through smart technology integration. Exposure to advanced technology and its architectural applications provided a unique opportunity for students to engage in high level research and explore potential career paths in architectural science, engineering, and sustainable design.
