New York, N.Y. — CASE presents startup work at Harbor Climate Collaborative NYC Climate Tech Showcase

The Harbor Climate Collaborative hosted a showcase to present the work of the Trust for Governors Island (TGI), New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) and the coordinated effort to scale high-impact climate tech products and services in New York City.

CASE was one of dozens of groups tabling at the event to showcase transformative climate technologies, products and services. Representing CASE were Nathanael Musera M.S. Built Ecologies ’23 and Will Pepi PhD Architectural Sciences ’24.

Nathanael Musera is the founder of MoRF where he develops environmentally, and economically responsible building materials made from cellulosic waste streams. These versatile products can be used for a variety of interior decorations, household objects and jewelry. Available in an unlimited selection of colors and finished with a beeswax coating for added protection and a unique sheen, MoRF is the future of eco-design.

Alongside MoRF, Will Pepi’s startup company BIOM is tackling the important challenge of improving indoor air quality. At BIOM, Pepi builds living moss air purifiers that create fresh air from inside. Plants are the generators of fresh outdoor air and by bringing plants inside we can transform our toxic buildings into healthy and efficient biomes. These unique and groundbreaking moss air purifiers act like rebreathers for buildings, allowing for air recirculation and HVAC energy savings by minimizing air/energy transfer across the building envelope.

Additionally, CASE displayed the work of faculty member Alexandros Tsamis and his company FibreWerks. They are developing multiple, complimenting natural fiber composite technologies aimed at improving the service life of cementitious building materials, such as concrete. The one-of-a-kind hemp rebar developed by Tsamis and his partners is low-carbon, non-corroding reinforcing technology that can significantly extend the service life of reinforced concrete, thereby greatly reducing material consumption of high-carbon cement or scarce structural grade sand.

Research at CASE continues to spearhead the critical environmental and humanitarian issues of our time and translate it through entrepreneurship. The NYC Climate Tech Showcase brought together a community of environmental justice focused groups who are all complementing each other’s efforts to combat climate change in New York City. CASE is proud to stand alongside such a wide pool of talent and dedication to a common mission.
